25 May 2014

Helen's violin teacher held her Spring recital on Friday.  Helen and Kimberly, her teacher, played 2 duets: Andante by Antonio Bruni and the Aria from the Peasant Cantata by J.S. Bach.  Helen played beautifully, with poise and expression.

Abe's soccer team has been playing in a Memorial Day soccer tournament.  We love watching Abe hustle, but the 2 games we saw on Saturday were a little painful to watch as his team lost both games.  Abe doesn't play on Sunday, but his team lost both of their Sunday games today and are out of the tournament.  Ouch!  On the bright side, we can look forward to watching some of the championship games on Monday without the added pressure of caring who wins.

The weather has been gorgeous this weekend.  We had a picnic dinner last night at a soccer game, ate breakfast on the patio this morning and enjoyed dinner al fresco with the sister missionaries tonight.

18 May 2014

We went to Sofi's Honors Night dinner on Wednesday.  Sofi got an award for having a great GPA and an award for being a student leader.  The LEADS award is given to 10 students from each grade who show Leadership, Enthusiasm, Academics, Determination and Success.  Sofi reluctantly posed with her certificates after the event.

She was more willing to pose with a cake Joey decorated to look like Sofi.  They decorated the cakes at  a Young Women's activity after the dinner.

The entire 3rd grade has been working hard on famous person projects.  They research the famous person of their choice, write a report, prepare and give a speech, write poems, draw portraits, make displays and end their projects by hosting a Famous Person fair.  All the third graders set up their displays in the cafeteria and parents come to see the displays and quiz them about their famous person.  Helen chose George Lucas.  She knows quite a lot about him now.  She dressed up like a Jedi for the fair.

Sofi's piano teacher held her Spring recital on Friday.  Sofi played the jazz classic, "Dream a Little Dream of Me" with delightful insouciance.

This is a photo of Gibson celebrating that the recital was over.  We heard lots of great music, but it was the end of a long week for Gibson and he was tired of sitting still.

Brandan took Abe to his first Boy Scouts campout, a camporee with several other troops.  About 10 boys from our troop went.  They camped in a lush meadow.

On Saturday, the troops competed against each other in several events.  At this station, the scouts tried to move a log between posts using ropes, pulleys and teamwork.

Abe's troop won first place at the hatchet throw.  The scouts threw hatchets at the end of a log painted with a target.  Abe contributed 2 ½ points to his team's score.  The troop also won 2nd place on the compass course.

Our stake held a formal youth dance on Saturday night.  It's an annual event, often called the Mormon Prom.  It was our ward's turn to host the dance and Sofi spent several days helping plan the dance, making decorations and decorating for the dance.  She also sewed the cute shrug she wore over her dress.  Sofi called Becky shortly after she got to the dance to ask Becky to come take photos.  They had set up a photo area along one wall, but the camera they planned on using wasn't working.  Becky went to the dance and took many poor photos of the cute kids.  (In her defense, the gym was very dark, the photo location was on the edge of the dance floor and the backdrop was very large.)  In the photo are Josh, Joey, Sofi and Carson-- no pairs here, just the way they got their photo taken.

Here are Sofi and Joey being goofy as we cleaned up after the dance.  Joey and friends painted the camel.  The theme of the dance was "Arabian Nights."

11 May 2014

Happy Mother's Day!  Our sweet kids made a delicious breakfast (maple-oatmeal scones, hash browns and sausage) for Becky to enjoy along with handmade cards.  Sofi gave a lovely talk in Sacrament meeting and also taught Gibson's Primary class so his teacher could go to Relief Society today.

Helen was recognized at an assembly on Friday for the school writing contest.  Her story was chosen as the best in her class.  All the winning stories were typed up and put it a book.  Each winner got a copy of the book and a copy is kept in the school library.

Brandan attended a family history conference last year in Salt Lake called RootsTech.  RootsTech makes a lot of their conference material available for stakes to use for mini conferences.  Brandan encouraged our stake to put on a family history fair this year.  He has been part of the family history fair committee for the past 6 months.  The fair took place this Saturday.  Brandan and Sofi attended the whole day event.  Becky, Helen and Gibson visited for a few minutes to see how the fair was going.  Brandan took a few personal items for the exhibit hall at the fair.

Helen, Gibson and Becky also planted our vegetable garden.  Our neighbor, Addi, helped and now she has asked her mom for her own garden.  We would give her space in ours, but we've already invited 2 other neighbors to join us and we're out of room.  We love our mini community garden.

Helen and Addi planted the vegetable starts and kept Gibson busy running to water the new plants.

4 May 2014

Sofi had her cast party last Saturday night and her friends roasted hot dogs and marshmallows.  Becky saved some hot dogs for the younger kids to roast.  Gib built a fire after school on Wednesday.  Gib is very good at building fires so Becky told him he needs to give Helen or Abe a turn next time.

Hot dogs are a treat at our mostly meatless house.

The school science fair was Thursday.  Gib did a research project about animal bones.  He found the bones of a bird foot at Arches National Park during spring break and brought it home to look at with our microscope.  We got a cow bone at the butcher to compare it with.  You can read his entire report on his poster.

Helen did a research project about how the arches in Arches National Park formed.

Abe did an experiment to see if different kinds of rocks would break if they were frozen and thawed repeatedly.  He won 2nd place for 5th grade.

This photo shows the kinds of rocks he used.  Only the pumice and sandstone broke.

Sofi is going to take the AP Calculus test this week.  This is a photo of her "studying" on Saturday.
