24 November 2024

The Scavenger Hunt concluded this week with the adjudication event at Southern Oregon University. Our team came in 5th out of 12 teams. This is a photo of the team after the event. From the left are Abby, Gibson, Asia, Addie, Jace, Evaine, Sarah, Colton, Abby, Jason, Grace, Ben, Liam and Sam.

Back at school, Becky's Construction Math classes took a test. Or in this sample of student work, used the test as a backdrop for exciting drawings of cars.

It's really hard to pick the pears at the tops of the pear trees in the orchard so they cut the top 3 feet off all of the trees. Brandan went to help rake the tree tops into the middle of the rows where a chipper can grind them up.

Gibson played another concert with the youth symphony on Sunday afternoon. Adia came to watch and brought Gib flowers.

This week was the Academic Scavenger Hunt which meant spending three days in the library researching ridiculously challenging questions. Here's a photo at the end of the hunt. From the left are Scott (principal), Luis, Jace, Jordan, Victor, Colton, Ben, Abby, Grace, Gibson, Adia, Will (coach) Jaidyn, Evaine, Becky (coach) and Breane. We won't learn how we did until we compete against other high schools at the adjudication event next week.

We're thankful to live in a neighborhood with gorgeous fall color around every corner. We've enjoyed beautiful walks this week.

On Saturday night we enjoyed a performance of the Youth Symphony with our favorite cellist. The symphony played pieces by Rimsky-Korsakov, Hayden, Bach and Wagner.

This is a photo of the musicians taking a bow after the performance.

3 November 2024

Helen presented about Canyon Guard at the Salt Lake Community College on Tuesday. Dan and Martha attended and sent us this photo.

Abe carved pumpkins with his roommates. Abe's pumpkin is the last one on the right.

Helen painted pumpkins with friends. Her pumpkin is the one on the left with ghosts.

Sofi and Nate carved pumpkins with Nate's family.

Adia and Gibson painted pumpkins.

This week was finals week. Becky saw some interesting work from students. This student ziptied their assignment instead of stapling it.

This student tried subliminal messages.

Another student tried flattery.

This student left a note at the end of her test. She retook her test later in the week and improved her score.

Construction Math designed stairs on Adobe Illustrator and then cut them out of cardboard on a laser cutter.

The students all got the same instructions and were supposed to build their stairs to ⅛ inch scale. The completed stairs are definitely not uniform.

Gibson and Adia made Halloween costumes this week.

They went as Lady Bug and Cat Noir, characters from a French cartoon about teenage superheroes.

Helen and friends dressed as Muppets. From the left are Anne (Animal), Riley (Fozzie Bear), Helen (Miss Piggy), Angela (Kermit the Frog), Alex (Beaker) and Elijah (unknown).

Becky pulled out the rest of our vegetable garden on Saturday. The plants were faded and nipped with frost, but still beautiful in their late fall state.
