26 August 2007

Our ward has a group called the Friendship Circle that meets once a week to work on Humanitarian projects. The local Salvation Army recently asked them for 45 quilts. To speed up the process, the Friendship Circle assembled bags of quilt squares and asked others to sew them together into quilt tops. The Friendship Circle then takes the finished tops, adds borders, batting and backing, and machine quilts them. Sophie picked up one of the kits to assemble and sewed it together herself. All of the materials for the quilts, as well as the labor, are donated.

Two years ago we planted an Asian pear tree. We're training it in an espalliere on the side of our garage. This week we had our first harvest- 8 pears. They are amazing -- crisp texture with a rich, sweet, butterscotchy flavor.

Update on the patio -- Brandan has finished placing the stones. It took 6000 pounds of slate. We discovered one problem: kids love digging out the sand between the stones. On Saturday, he and the kids built a sandbox to dig in instead of digging in the patio. The photo below shows the kids digging a hole to put the sandbox in.

A sand box or as Linda always says a luxury cat litter box. I like the sand box idea and I guess the cats do to. The pears sound delicious. I planted a apricot tree against Sister Whitelocks garage and was going to do the same as you but most of the main tree died so it may take a while.
6000 lbs. that is a ton or I should say 3 tons of rock. I guess it is good physical labor. We are painting the house and just about have the porch and half of the base painted. We have repainted several times because a good idea on swatches is a bad match on the house.
My sister Barbara is just about ready to start her mission to South Carolina. Her son-in-law Chad applied for an won a huge scholarship of $300,000. to pay for his advanced degree. It turns out he was the only one out of hundreds of applications that knew who the man was that the scholarship was named after. I think it was Astranaut McKowan or something like that. He plans on going to either UCLA or U of Kentucky.
Both Jaxson and Parker are now 7. We enjoy the blog and seeing the pictures. Keep them coming. Grandma and pa Hull

That is terrific work on the quilt. Your grandma is so proud of you and that you are following in the line of quilters in our family.
