We've been poring over seed catalogs, trying to decide what to plant in our vegetable garden this year. Everything looks so good and the descriptions are mouthwatering. We're drawn to the unusual- purple carrots, variegated beets, baby pak choi. We asked Helen what she'd like to grow in her garden bed. "Bacon."
Helen's playgroup friends came over on Thursday and the girls made love bugs out of Valentine's candy. Food crafts are Becky's favorite. The girls had fun creating bugs from candy. . .
. . .and then they ate their creations, leaving nothing to try to display or store.
Saturday morning we went to a Chinese New Year parade. It was such a great small town parade, mostly civic groups dressed in vaguely Chinese clothing. The oddest entry was the Scottish bagpipe band (dressed in kilts, not Chinese clothing). Our favorites were the lion and dragon dancers. Sophie took this great photo as the dragon went by. This is the year of the Ox so if you were born during 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1985, 1997 or 2009, expect this year to be filled with hard work, patience and steady progress.

I was just talking with a friend yesterday about growing bacon, but he didn't get his from a seed catalog.
My sister grows eggs, which is less commitment and sounds great if it wasn't for our CC&R's.
One of our big plans for this year is to really commit to growing a vegetable garden. We have tons of space, but never seem to get it together in time! I'm going to watch your blog for help. Which seed catalogs do you use?
Thanks thanks thanks for the awesome Capri Sun bag. Anna has claimed it as her own and the girls can't wait to make their own. It's such an great recyling craft--but a lot of Capri Suns to drink in the meantime! That was really thoughtful of you!
I'm really hoping to plant a garden this year as well so you'll have to pass along any of your favorites. Love all the great projects you guys do - so creative!
Two favorite catalogs: John Scheepers Kitchen Garden Seeds for detailed planting instructions and Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds for good prices. Both have websites and many more varieties of seeds than you'll find in a local nursery.
Thanks, Becky. I'll look them up.
I watched a garden special on square foot gardening on the BYU channel and got all excited about it. It says to make your beds 6" high, but that seems to shallow for carrots. . . what do you think? Are there some veggies that need deeper boxes? It seems like yours are much deeper. . . it also said to water every other day from a bucket of water, warmed by the sun. Do you do that or do you install a drip system? I'm hoping to come to activity days on Wed. to pick up some trek bonnets. . . Maybe I can pick your brain then?
