| Becky cleaned out the pantry this week and was struck with the variety of flours we use. The photo shows the more unusual ones. We also have plain wheat and white flour. A few years ago we didn't even know the available alternatives to wheat. In case you can't read the labels, pictured are sorghum, xanthan gum, garbanzo & fava, gluten free pancake mix, coconut, rice, potato starch, buckwheat (despite its name it has nothing to do with wheat), quinoa and tapioca flours. With this assortment we can make a pretty tasty variety of wheat free foods for our kids with allergies. |

I had heard of a few of those flours, but I was amazed at the variety! I'm amazed at your resourcefulness.
It's sad to think my kids won't even know who Calvin and Hobbes are.
So which of those flours do you like to cook with best?
Our all-purpose flour for the kids is a mix of bean tapioca and sorghum flours, cornstarch and xanthan gum to make it stick together.
Coconut flour makes sweet and moist muffins and cookies with a coconut flavor and has more fiber than whole wheat flour (10 g v. 4 g per 1/4 cup.) Gibson and I like it. Sophie, Helen and Abe don't.
Wow, check out your food storage behind Gibson in that last picture. You look very organized and very stocked up.
I am sure it is so nice now to have so many alternatives to wheat flour.
Do your kids learn to cook the food too so they will be able to cook for themselves when they are on their own?
We love Calvin too. And now that I have John I realize how much that I considered amazingly imaginative is simply an accurate account of how a 6-year-old boy thinks. My favorite is one in which Calvin is pounding nails in the coffee table and a very angry parent hollers "Calvin what are you doing?" Calvin answers "Is this a trick question?"
We miss Calvin and Hobbes also, but not as much as the Hull Family!
