Saturday was National Talk Like a Pirate Day so Sofi's school encouraged students to dress like pirates on Friday. For extra drama, Sofi used make up to add a fresh knife wound to her face.
Helen and Gibson asked their teacher if they could dress like pirates, too. A couple of other classmates also dressed up.
Helen set up a lemonade stand during Gib's soccer game on Saturday. She sold out in about an hour.
Gib moved up to U10 soccer this year. This is the first year the teams play with a goalie, have to watch offsides and keep score. We can see a big jump in Gib's soccer skills as he plays with older kids.
Brandan is coaching Abe's team. He has 17 boys on his team, ranging from some of the most skilled players in the league to a couple of boys who have never played soccer before. Their first two games were dismal. The other teams were bigger, more experienced and more selective about who can play. Abe was discouraged looking ahead to a losing season with his ragtag team. To boost team morale, Brandan set smaller goals for his team to work on. He gives them a point for each skill they successfully execute during a game. He promised them a party when they got to 10 points. The team got to 10 in their next game. Now the boys can see their successes even though they might not win.
After soccer we hurried to the end of our ward clean up at a local pioneer cemetery. There are several of these small cemeteries nearby and they require a lot of volunteer hours to maintain. We helped pull weeds and bag leaves. We cleared the area around the grave in this photo. The marker is for twin sisters, Vera and Velma, who died when they were 1 year old.
