28 August 2016

After Brandan and Abe left for Australia last Friday, Becky, Helen and Gibson stayed in Salt Lake through Monday to make sure Sofi was settled into school.  Sofi's first week of school has been delightful.  We didn't have a camera with us, but here are a few pictures from our trip home.  On Monday we visited the Discovery Center in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.  Helen and Gibson liked recording stories and photoshopping their faces onto silly pictures.  Here is Helen dressed as an English lady.

Here is Gibson dressed as a Roman soldier.  Each visitor to the center checks out an iPad.  The iPad automatically sends all the activities you do during your visit to your email address.  We could have spent a couple of hours here if we had more time.

After we left Salt Lake, we drove to Idaho, stopping to visit Grandma and Grandpa and Sarah's family.  Sarah's neighbors, Jane and Will, came to play while we were there.  Jane is the same age as Helen and Will is a year younger than Gibson.  All the kids worked together on a craft project.  Here are Will and Gibson.

Here are Zina, Helen and Jane.  The kids made 3D hot air balloons from construction paper.

Sarah hung their finished projects in her classroom.  Will's art is on the left, then Helen's, then Gibson's.  Jane's project is on a different wall.  Sarah's first grade class is going to make more hot air balloons to hang up.

Brandan, Abe and Dan have had lots of adventures in Australia this week.  Normally, we would let them blog about their trip when they got home.  Brandan is pretty sure he'll be too busy when he returns to post anything.  We'll put up some photos now and Abe can add anything or make corrections when he gets home.  When we left off last week, they were headed on a cruise from Cairns to the Great Barrier Reef to go snorkeling.  Here are Brandan and Abe on the boat.

Dan took this photo of some coral and fish.  The cruise had a variety of options for viewing the reef, from scuba diving and snorkeling to a glass bottom boat to a submarine-ish thing.  It was possible to stay completely dry and still see sea creatures.  Besides the coral and fish, they saw a shark, a sea turtle and a giant clam.

Here's a photo of Abe snorkeling.  Brandan, Abe and Dan all snorkeled.  Abe liked the submarine best for seeing the reef.

On the first day, the cruise took the passengers to an artificial platform on top of the reef that provided a good location for snorkeling and diving.  The second day the cruise took the passengers to Fitzroy Island.  Fitzroy Island is covered by tropical rainforest and is part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

They snorkeled in a quiet bay and hiked to a lighthouse, a short and steep hike.

On Wednesday, they drove from Cairns to Kuranda, a nearby village in a rainforest.  Abe got to pet a kangaroo.

A highlight for Abe was holding a koala.  He said it was very soft and surprisingly heavy.  They also saw lots of reptiles, including both freshwater and saltwater crocodiles.  Abe did not hold a crocodile.

This is a photo of Abe with a curtain tree.

On Thursday morning they had time to visit a botanical garden in Cairns before catching their flight.  The garden was full of tropical plants from all around the world.

The Australian fast food chain Hungry Jack's looks a lot like an American Burger King.

Abe looks happy with his meal.  Eating regular meals while traveling is always a challenge.  Adding food allergies makes eating even trickier.

Abe bought a wombat at the airport.  He named it Fitzroy.  We think Bombat the Combat Wombat would also be a good name.

Now would be a good time to add a map of Australia and a description of their travel plans.  They flew from the US to Brisbane, located in the middle of the eastern coast.  From Brisbane they flew north to Cairns.  On Thursday, they left Cairns and flew to Adelaide, located in the south central coast area.  Adelaide is the biggest city in the area.  They will be spending most of their time in Victor Harbor and Normanville which are both 30 minutes away from Adelaide.  On Friday they will fly from Adelaide to Sydney.  On Saturday they will fly home.

Brandan, Dan and Abe did baptisms at the Adelaide temple.

Brandan's distant cousins, Cynthia and Murray live in Victor Harbor.  Cynthia probably knows more about the Hulls around the world than any person alive.  Brandan and Dan are looking forward to learning from her and exploring her collections while they are visiting.

Cynthia has also researched Dan's Frew relatives for him, even though she is not related to the Frews.  Here is a photo of Abe standing on Frew St.  The house the Frews lived in is further down the street.

The Ellis family invited them to dinner.  It looks like Abe is playing video games with the kids in this photo.  President Ellis is Cynthia's stake president.

The branch in Victor Harbor meets in this small, rented building.

Brandan estimated there were about 30 people in church on Sunday.  Abe said there was one priest, one teacher and one deacon (him) in Young Mens.  The branch met for snacks after church.  You can see Brandan in the top left of the photo.

Brandan took a photo of the Australian favorite, Vegemite.  Vegemite is made from yeast and looks like tar.  Abe has avoided it.  He's probably allergic to it, right?

It's already Monday for our travelers and they started the day with a hike to the Ingallala waterfalls.  It's wintertime in Australia now and rainy.  Here's a photo of Dan and Abe.

Here's another photo of the waterfalls.

They are staying in Normanville and are surrounded by sheep and cattle farms.  The rain makes the landscape green and lush.  You might think you were in Western Oregon, maybe the Willamette Valley, until a kangaroo hopped in front of your car.  The kangaroos wander across the road like deer do in the US, sometimes with the same unfortunate end.

21 August 2016

Zheng, the Chinese teacher, would like to expand the Chinese program in our school district so she asked some of her students to help her present her ideas to the school board.  Zheng made her proposal and the kids shared what they had learned in Chinese.  Sofi and Abe were two of the students who helped out.  Zheng is an extraordinarily dedicated teacher and we are very lucky our kids can learn from her.

Sofi packed up her room this week as she prepared to leave for college.  She may be the only freshman in the dorms who packed a candy thermometer.

Carson left for the MTC Wednesday morning.  Sofi's friends are spreading out across the country.  We're going to miss having this great group of kids at our house.  Our family woke up at 4:50 am to see Carson off at the airport.  Joey and her mom also came.  After three weeks in the MTC, he'll head to Ohio.

Our family drove to Utah on Thursday to take Sofi to the University of Utah.  Our family enjoys our fire pit at home, so we loved the giant fire pit at the entrance to her dorms.  The U is located on a hill and the views from the dorm are amazing-- Salt Lake City in one direction and the mountains in the other.

This will be Sofi's home for the next year.  She shares an apartment with 7 other girls.  They have a common living room and kitchen.  Sofi has her own bedroom and shares a bathroom with one other girl.

We spent Friday getting Sofi settled in on campus.  It was a long day for Helen, Abe and Gibson.  They entertained themselves in a variety of ways such as flipping up all the electrical outlets in this classroom.

Since the U joined the PAC 12 conference, sports have become much more prominent on campus.  They've adopted a big red U as a logo and liberally use the logo everywhere.  The effect is not subtle. Our kids climbed up on this especially large U.

Here are Helen, Abe and Gibson.  We think climbing up on the U for a photo is encouraged, so they're ok.

Brandan and Abe split off from the college adventure Friday night and flew to Australia with Brandan's dad, Dan.  We've been able to text, email and even talk on the phone despite the 16 hour time difference.  Brandan sent a few photos from their adventures so far.  He didn't send descriptions, so these are mostly guesses.  Because of the time difference and the length of the flight, they skipped Saturday and landed in Brisbane on Sunday.  This is possibly a photo of lunch in Brisbane.

They attended church in Brisbane and then drove around the city.  Brandan is once again driving on the left side of the road.  This is a photo of the Brisbane temple.  It looks a lot like our temple except with tropical landscaping.  Abe packed church clothes, he just changed after church.

Sunday evening they flew north from Brisbane to Cairns (Australians call this city Cans- no "r" sound.)  This is probably a photo from Cairns, judging from the ocean view and from Abe wearing a swimsuit.  It's wintertime in Australia, but the weather in Cairns is sunny and warm.

Cairns is a great spot to set out from to see the Great Barrier Reef.  When we last spoke to Brandan (Sunday afternoon for us, Monday morning for him,) they were on a cruise ship headed out to the reef.  They plan to spend the next 2 days snorkeling and exploring the reef.  We're excited to see more photos and hear more about their trip!

14 August 2016

Here's one more photo from Parker's visit.  On Monday night we went to a classical music concert at the Britt.  The program was a nice mix of vocal and instrumental pieces.

After Parker left, we worked on some projects around the house.  Becky painted our garage.  This is a photo of her power washing the garage to prepare it for painting.

Abe went to the pear farm one more time for the season.  Pear picking has officially ended for 2016.  It was over 100 degrees so he and his friends went swimming afterwards.  From the left are Abe, Malakai, Camden and Jake.

Brandan and Gibson worked on assembling ceiling fans for Brandan and Becky's bedroom and our family room.

We picked all the asian pears form our pear tree. Abe counted them and we have 255 pears this year.

Helen's friend, Lucy, invited Helen to go boating with her family on Saturday.

Helen liked riding on the inflatable tube.

Lucy's mom sent us photos from their outing.   Helen had a great time.

7 August 2016

Brandan's nephew, Parker, flew out from Utah to visit our family this week.  The first thing he did was find a place to hang his hammock.  He and Abe are now neighbors in our backyard.  They rearrange their hammocks a lot and even slept out in them one night.

Parker hasn't been to visit us in a long time and he especially wanted to return to the redwoods.  We drove out to Stout Grove in the Jedidiah Smith State Park on Thursday.

A family of 10 was trying to hold hands around a very large tree and came up short.  Our kids ran up to help.  It took 16 people to complete the circle.  You can see Parker on the left in a baseball hat.

We took a detour to the Smith River to play.

The fallen trees can be as impressive as the standing trees.

Abe wiggled into the middle of a decaying tree.

Here are Helen, Abe, Parker, Gibson and Sofi.

Next stop was Secret Beach.  The air temperature was about 30 degrees cooler than back home.  The water temperature was even colder, but that didn't stop Parker and Abe from running into the ocean.

You can see their heads bobbing in the water.

Cold!  But that didn't stop them from going back again... and again.

Abe drew his name in the sand.

A beautiful waterfall spills onto the beach.

Gibson stayed dry and mostly warm while digging caves in the sand.

Here we are ready to go home.

From the left: Parker, Helen, Sofi, Abe and Gibson

On Friday Parker, Abe and Sofi did baptisms at the temple.

If you are Mormon in Southern Oregon, August means pear picking time.  Parker cheerfully got up at 5:30 am on Saturday to come pick pears with us.

Abe and Sofi were a little less cheerful, but still willing and hard workers.

Back at home, we had crepes and the Olympics for breakfast.

We went rafting Saturday afternoon.  It was a perfect day to be on the river.

Parker spent almost as much time in the water as he did in the raft.  We're lucky enough to have him for a few more days before he goes home.
