2 December 2018

Becky's gluten free baking class made pizza this week.  It was a big hit with the students.  Pepperoni and cheese were their two favorite toppings.

Abe is learning how to program an Arduino.  Arduinos were invented in Italy to provide an easy platform for people to learn about electronics and program their own inventions.  The Arduino includes a programmable circuit board, open source software and a wide variety of hardware.  Abe's first project was to program an LED bulb to change colors.  He could adjust how quickly the light changed colors and the sequence of colors.

For his next project Abe hooked up lights so he could control them with a joystick.  Abe is working on a bigger invention for a school project that is due at the end of March.  Stay tuned to see what he comes up with!

We celebrated December 1st as a day of service by buying pajamas, socks and underwear for foster kids. #LightTheWorld

The missionaries in our zone held a service scavenger hunt.  They knocked on doors in our neighborhood and asked if they could do any service.  These elders helped Abe sweep wet leaves off our patio.

Helen's violin group performed at the Festival of Trees.  They played a mix of Christmas and classical music.

The conductor, Faina, invited different students to lead each Christmas carol.  Helen led "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

The Festival of Trees auctioned off Christmas trees and the proceeds go to the hospital.  This dinosaur tree was Becky's favorite.  She especially liked the Tyrannosaurus eating the star at the top of the tree.

After Becky picked up Abe and his friends from soccer practice Saturday night, they stopped by an elaborate Christmas display.  Besides hundreds of flashing lights that were coordinated to Christmas music, the homeowner had set up a hot chocolate stand.  All the boys made themselves a cup of hot chocolate.  With a few more Arduinos, Abe could make our Christmas lights flash in time to music.

The theme for our Christmas countdown this year is "Let every heart prepare Him room."  Each night we are reading a section of the Gospel of Mark until we finish on December 24.  This basket of envelopes lets us know what to read each day.

A few puzzle pieces are inside each envelope.  We'll add the puzzle pieces to our magnet board and slowly build the puzzle over the month.  Hopefully reading Mark together will teach us about Jesus Christ and help us feel close to Him.  Mark was a missionary companion to Peter and had Peter's eye witness account to write about.  It's the shortest gospel, but it is also dramatic and powerful.  More than telling what Jesus said, Mark shows what Jesus did.
