21 October 2007

We don't take many pictures of food because more often than not, the photographed food looks like unappetizing slop instead of the delicious meal we remember. Last Sunday's dinner was exceptional, though. On the menu: Sausage and White Bean Stew served in roasted pumpkins, Dakota rolls from Great Harvest and a spinach salad (amazing recipe from Maggie). For dessert, a recipe from Becky's mom that we affectionately call Pumpkin Gunk and eat with gusto. We had terrific company, too, we have such nice missionaries in our ward.

Becky sewed Halloween costumes for Abe and Sophie this week. She still is working on Helen's. The costumes are very hush, hush. We'll unveil them for Halloween, but here is a photo of the Batman costume Abe made himself from the scraps of fabric.

Que es esto? This is a tortilla press, true third world technology in our very own kitchen. Brandan saw a photo of one in the newspaper and Abe and Sophie helped him build one from wood scraps. We love to find food that all of us can eat. Then they made homemade corn tortillas. The tortillas were delicious- so tender compared to store bought corn tortillas. We feel a taco party coming on.

The highlight of our week: Sophie turned 10! She's just getting better with age -- sweet, smart, creative, sometimes a little spicy. We celebrated with dinner at Wendy's followed by cake and ice cream. Sophie has decorated her own birthday cake every year since she was 5. This year she made a volcano with sponge cake, chocolate ganache frosting and pink whipped cream filling for lava. We think it's a shield volcano -- what do you say, Joe?
