7 October 2007

Thursday was a rainy day in a string of rainy days and Abe complained, "I'm bored!" Well, Abe, what do you want to do? "I want to drive screws into a cardboard box." Okay. So this is a picture of Abe twisting screws into a box. It kept him happy for half an hour and then he was content with his old toys again.

The October Friend had a great suggestion to help kids listen to conference. The kids assigned a key word to different colors of Jelly Bellies. Whenever they heard the key word, they got to eat the appropriate Jelly Belly. This game is pure genius. Our kids have never paid attention so well. We loved listening to conference. Brandan liked President Eyring's priesthood session talk and Elder Ballard's talk. Becky loved the talks by President Eyring (Sunday), Sister Beck and Elder Oaks. Sophie liked listening to stories. Abe's favorite part was the game. Helen liked the songs.

In between conference sessions we dashed to our favorite plant nursery. The owners are our age, have encyclopedic knowledge of plants for our area, a great dog and are very tolerant of our kids playing with their yard carts. Fall is our favorite time to get plants. We got some pretty cool plants including a bright, beautiful Croscosmia with orange flowers and a shrub called Fatsia that is a tropical looking evergreen with big, broad leaves.

We celebrate lots of firsts with kids: first tooth, first day of school, etc. Well, today was Helen's first asthmatic episode. Luckily (unless you're the doctor), our doctor is open on Sunday and we didn't have to go to the ER. She'll take oral steroids for a few days. Since it's her first episode, it isn't officially asthma, but with our kids' history, she's a sure bet. Not worth a celebration. Poor Gibson is destined for asthma and allergies as well, we're sure.

I loved Sister Beck's talk as well as Dallin H. Oak's. My sister called me yesterday and asked if I heard about the controversy over Sister Beck's talk. I hadn't. I guess a bunch of Mormon women are mad that she suggested women should stay home with their kids. Getting mad at the Lord's servant, I don't think these are women that know. I consider you a woman that knows and am grateful for your friendship. P.S. Great plants
