Brandan and Helen made delicious chocolate chip cookies without wheat or eggs (or milk, nuts, bananas or kiwi.)

The cookies tasted as good as they look.  Brandan and Helen are a great baking team!

Back in April Abe bid on kayaking lessons at our ward youth auction.  This week Aaron and Emily took us to their favorite spot along the Illinois River.  They have 2 kid sized kayaks and the river was the perfect place to play.  Helen is on the green kayak and Samuel is on the yellow.

Abe, Aaron and Adele jumped off the rocks into the deep end of the pool.  Helen liked jumping from a lower spot.

Adele, Helen and Becky took a raft across the river.

The kids tried scooping fish up in nets-- catch and release, of course.

It was perfect weather to stay outside all day.  With the forest fires, we've had too few days outside this summer.  We saw the first signs of fall with a few trees changing colors.  Here are Gib and Samuel scrambling on rocks.

Sofi found a shady spot to read.

Joey's family brought us a pan full of vegetables from their garden-- beets, carrots, squash, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and the largest onion we've ever seen.

The onion was so big it deserved its own photo.

We went to open houses to prepare for the start of school next week.  Helen and Gib will be starting at a new magnet school.  They'll be in the same class, even though Helen will be in the 5th grade and Gib will be in 3rd.  The class is set up for lots of projects and and creative learning.

Their teacher spent lots of time this summer getting their classroom ready.  Becky helped a little by sewing covers for floor cushions.  One of the cushions is behind Gib's head in the photo.  The teacher plans to use the cushions for outdoor seating.

The kids in our neighborhood have spent a lot of time this week circling the block on bikes and skateboards.  One person rides a bike and tows one or two kids behind them.  Abe, Helen and Gib rode around for hours on Saturday.

Brandan helped Sofi hang shelves made from rain gutters in her bedroom.  Sofi wanted the shelves to display her collection of Cinderella books, many of them gifts from her Grandma Linda before she died.

Rain gutters! What a clever idea for bookshelves. We had such a great time with you at the river. We should do it again soon. Well, maybe after the baby comes.

I love the Cinderella Book collection, that is one of my favorite stories as well, although I collect different versions of East of the Sun West of the Moon, my Grandma read it to me long ago when I had the mumps. Sadly a leaky roof, ruined all but one book last spring. That onion is almost bigger than Helen's head! Wow...
