15 July 2018

On Monday we dropped Helen and Clara off at SOU for a weeklong basketball camp.  Clara has played basketball since 2nd grade.  Helen has never played basketball, but she wants to try out for the school team this year.  She goes to a small school so she'll make the team, but we wanted her to learn some skills.  Besides, we knew she'd have a great time living on campus with her best friend for a week.  The girls shared this tiny dorm room.

We had a break on Tuesday between Abe's piano lesson and Gib's cello lesson so we went to a park to play.  Abe and Gib had fun racing each other to the top of the climbing structure and down again.

On Friday, Becky and Gibson picked Helen up from basketball camp.  Clara had to leave Thursday night for another commitment so we didn't see her.  We met Helen in the cafeteria for lunch.  She came in after a long morning playing in a camp wide tournament.  She looked like a baller!

After lunch, we watched the championship games from the tournament.  The camp was divided into 3 leagues: a girls' league and 2 boys' leagues.  Helen's team played in the championship game for the girls' league and won!  They went 7 wins and 0 losses for the tournament.  Helen is in the middle of the photo.

We could see a big improvement in Helen's skills.  She'll need more practice to gain ball handling skills, but she's a strong defensive player.  She hustled on the court and no one she was guarding was able to score.

Here's a photo of a big group cheer at the end of the tournament.

After the tournament, the coaches handed out awards.  Helen won the Camper of the Week award for the girls.  This was a big surprise!  The head coach of the camp was the women's basketball coach for SOU.  He said Helen earned the award for working hard and having a great attitude on and off the court.  The other people in the photo are the other coaches, mostly college basketball players.  Helen made huge gains with skills at the camp and gained confidence that she can comfortably play basketball alongside her team this winter.

Abe was off to Six Flags on Friday with a group of friends.  Ashton's dad drove a van full of boys down on Friday and brought them home on Saturday.  Abe's favorite roller coaster was Medusa.  He threw up after riding the Lasso of Truth, a ride that corkscrews while going in circles.  It makes us dizzy talking about it.  Other than that, Abe had a great time.  In the photo are Spencer, Ashton, Ben, Marcus, Malakai and Abe.

It was over 100 degrees on Saturday so the rest of us drove to Lake of the Woods.  A monstrous bug unlike any we've seen landed on our car window when we got there.  Helen is touching it in the photo.  Its antenna were longer than its body.

It was a perfect lake day.  We played at the girls camp area.  Helen and Gib took a kayak out to the dock.  They also explored the edge of the lake.

Here they are coming back to shore after a couple of hours out.  Brandan and Becky took a leaky paddle boat out and then a kayak.  Brandan fixed all the seats on the kayaks so they were attached properly.  He couldn't do much to help the paddleboats which are old and need new gaskets.

We ate dinner on one of the docks before heading home.  Our time at the lake was the perfect break from the heat at home.
