5 August 2018

We've had another week of poor air quality due to forest fires and we've spent most of the week indoors.  We've watched movies, played card games and baked.  Becky made a key lime pie for family night.

Abe made himself a potato lasagna roll for lunch one day.  He layered sliced potatoes, spinach, ricotta, tomatoes and meat and then rolled the layers into a cylinder.

This is what his lasagna roll looked like before he baked it.  It was about 2 pm when he finished so he saved it for lunch the next day.

Helen and Gibson whipped up a batch of butterbeer, one of the treats in the Harry Potter books.

This is a photo of Gibson with a mug of the finished drink.  He got the recipe from his new Wizard's Cookbook.  The cookbook has recipes inspired by some of Gibson's favorite books: Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia, the Lord of the Rings.  Gibson got the book as a prize when he turned in his summer reading log at the library.

As a member of the Relief Society presidency, Becky has been working on ministering interviews.  Our friend, Sue, made it super easy.  Not only did she come to our house for her interview, she taught us a super cool, never fail card trick.  We have no idea how it works, but that doesn't stop it from turning out every single time.  Helen is looking forward to teaching it to the cousins later this month.

A valve on our sprinklers is leaking.  This summer we've had to turn our sprinklers on and off manually instead of using the timer.  Brandan and Abe worked together on Saturday to replace the valve.  Now it's leaking more than before.  Brandan will keep working at it.  Each attempt is closer to a fix!

Our friends went out of town this week and asked for help collecting the eggs from their chickens.  Helen said she'd help, mainly because she wanted to see their new baby calf, Logan.  He's named Logan because he was born the same day their son, Logan, left for a mission to Guatemala.  Helen says Logan is cuter than she imagined.

Here's a photo of Logan with his mama, Margaret.  Margaret is a Dexter cow which is a small breed.  She's about half the size of a Hereford and a third the size of a Holstein.  Logan is tiny.

After admiring Logan, Helen got to work collecting eggs.

Here's a curious hen that poked its head into the henhouse to see what Helen was doing.

Meanwhile, Brandan, Abe and Gibson were checking out the next phase of Crater Works, a maker space our high school is building.  Inspired by ADX in Portland, the high school bought a warehouse across the highway from the school.  The warehouse will be remodeled to include space and tools for activities like welding, 3-D printing, woodworking and laser cutting.  There will be a commercial kitchen and a tool library.  The space will be used by the high school and community members will be able to buy memberships to use the space and equipment after school hours.

The boys looked at the architect's model for the space.  The high school would like every student to have experiences using the equipment at the maker space.  It could be an entire class, for example a welding class, or it could be as part of a class, for example, a science class using woodworking tools to build catapults.  The high school has been able to do a little of this on their campus, but the new space will increase opportunities.  Inviting community memberships will help the school raise money to maintain and improve the space.

One last food photo.  Abe cooked dinner Saturday night.  He made Roasted Lemon Potatoes and Chicken.  It looked amazing, smelled heavenly and tasted even better!
