Abe spent 6 days in Portland at the state DECA competition. The coach, Mr. Rogan, drove everyone up in a short bus. From the left are Skyler, Curtis, Hannah, Elizabeth, Abigail, Abe, JC, Brody and Brooklyn.
The Willamette River runs through Portland. The weather was chilly, but rain free. Mr. Rogan planned a full schedule of sight-seeing, shopping and fun activities to go along with the competition. He even dropped Abe and Elizabeth off at church Sunday morning, which is definitely above the call of duty. (They caught an Uber back to the team's hotel when church was over.)
Hannah designed matching T-shirts for the team. The kids are making the DECA diamond with their fingers.
They went to a hockey game for the Portland Winterhawks.
Here are the kids dressed for success.
And here they are looking even nicer for the final awards night. Two of Abe's teammates won first place in the business law event and will get to go to the national DECA competition this spring. Abe competed in marketing. This was his first year participating in DECA and he had a great time.
Our ward has been restructuring and redefining goals with the new youth program. Our first big activity (besides training which has seemed endless) was a joint campout with the Young Men and Young Women. This took weeks of planning, involving the youth and inviting them to lead. The result was a resounding success! The campout is sure to become a favorite memory for all the youth. The location of the camp was our church campsite at Lake of the Woods. This photo gives a small idea of the coordination involved to get 40 youth and adults and their gear to the lake.
A favorite activity was sledding down an icy track between the cabins.
A group from another ward was also staying at the camp and the two wards had an epic snowball fight. This is a photo of a lull between skirmishes.
The lake was frozen over and some of the kids walked all the way to the other side, about three quarters of a mile one way. This is a photo of Helen and Mary sitting on the ice. The kids came home bruised, sore, tired and very, very happy.
