2 May 2021

On Tuesday, Abe competed in the final round of the International Career Development Conference, DECA's final competition. In a typical year, the international competition would be hosted in a major city. This year the finals were scheduled in Anaheim, California. Like so many other activities, ICDC moved online because of the corona virus. This photo shows Abe waiting to be let into the zoom room for his event to begin. Once the timer started, he was given 10 minutes to read a scenario and prepare a business plan based on the scenario, then he had 10 minutes to present his plan to a judge.

Abe was interviewed about his experience for the newspaper. The newspaper used a photo from 2 years ago to illustrate the article.

The second page of the article had several quotes from Abe. He'll find out how he did in the competition later this week. Helen is also mentioned near the bottom of the first column as a fellow competitor at  ICDC.

Gibson learned how to use a new tool at Craterworks this week: a planer. Brandan said he would donate some walnut to the project, but the wood needed to be planed to a consistent thickness. There was a bit of a hiccup in the plan. When Becky pulled the wood off the shelf in the garage, meaning to get 3 pieces of wood, she grabbed 2 pieces of walnut and accidentally also got 1 piece of padauk. Freshly cut padauk is bright orange, but the wood mellows to a rich brown when it is exposed to the air so the color was close to walnut. Nathan, Gib's teacher, hadn't heard of padauk before, and was a bit confused by the unusual color when they started cutting the piece of wood into two inch squares. Oops! So it looks like Gibson will be making a padauk and maple chessboard.

Helen got her first vaccine dose for COVID-19 this week. Abe got his first dose 2 weeks ago and Becky got her second dose this week. Little by little, we feel like the end of the pandemic is in sight, at least for our mostly vaccinated family.

Our county moved back into extreme restrictions on Friday because of rising hospitalizations in our state due to corona virus. Luckily, our ward Relief Society and Young Women's party was planned for Thursday night. Helen got to spend the evening with her friends, Annie and Sierra.

Gibson played 2 soccer games on Saturday in miserable rain. Spectators are limited due to the corona virus and the number of spectators was far below the limit. Most parents stayed in their cars.

Our air conditioner needed repairs last summer and we found the source of the trouble was that our dryer vented right onto our air conditioning unit. After 16 summers, the unit was full of dryer lint. With summer just around the corner, our air conditioner will soon be in high demand. On Saturday, Brandan rerouted the dryer vent along our house so the opening is far away from the air conditioner.

Saturday was also the deadline for Abe to accept or decline the many offers from colleges that he has received. He has had a hard time choosing, but finally committed to BYU. All 5 of his best friends will also be attending BYU, so he has a lot to look forward to when he returns from his mission.
