12 September 2021

Gibson started high school on Tuesday. He slid right in to 9th grade. He likes his classes and his favorite class is working at Craterworks for his last 2 periods every day. Hs official title is "peer teacher" and he uses the time to help Nathan test prototypes and prep for upcoming field trips and projects for other teachers.

Helen started 11th grade on Wednesday. She has a challenging schedule, including Mandarin, AP Calculus and AP Government jumped right in with homework and projects. It's a big difference from zoom school last year and Helen is ready to make up for opportunities lost during the pandemic.

It's fantastic having Helen and Gibson at the same school!  Helen takes Gibson to seminary and then to school. They even have early bird Mandarin together.

Gibson got braces on his bottom teeth on Wednesday. He had a sore mouth for a few days, but he has gotten used to them.

One of Helen's teachers gave her this T-shirt to pass along to Abe. Abe earned the T-shirt last year by competing at DECA nationals.

Brandan, Becky and Abe took a road trip north on Friday so Abe could get a typhoid vaccine before leaving for South Korea. The covid pandemic has limited traveling and the demand for typhoid vaccines has plummeted. As a result, the manufacturer of the oral vaccine stopped making it and our local health department and pharmacies stopped carrying the injection. The closest location Abe could receive the vaccine was a tiny travel pharmacy in Vancouver, Washington that is only open on Fridays. The missionary department recommended Abe get the vaccine as close as possible to the time he is scheduled to leave as the vaccine wears off in about 2 years. This is a photo of Abe waiting outside the pharmacy, Passport Health.

We drove 4 ½ hours for a shot that took about 15 minutes to get, including Abe's consultation with the nurse, Gloria. Gloria had a giant map of the world on the wall of her office. Abe is pointing to Busan, South Korea.

After Abe was vaccinated, we went to PF Changs for lunch.

Then Abe settled in for his afternoon MTC class, joining zoom with his phone. Home MTC turned into on-the-road MTC.

Later, we attended the Portland temple. Currently, our Medford temple is closed for renovations. It was wonderful to enjoy the beauty of the Portland temple and felt especially sweet to share the experience with Abe.

Meanwhile, back at home, Helen and Gibson took care of school and soccer practice. Helen and Aunika went to the high school football game Friday night.

Here are Erin, Helen and Aunika at the game. The game had a Hawaiian theme.

Elders Ashton, Hull and Grant played 9 holes of golf on Saturday morning. We were all happy to see blue skies after weeks of poor air quality.

Becky hiked Wagner Butte on Saturday with a group of women from our stake. Our stake Relief Society presidency organized 3 different hikes of different lengths to provide a chance to gather and think about President Nelson's talk, Christ is Risen: Faith in Him Will Move Mountains. From the left are Renae, Tessa, Becky, Andrea and Marlene.

Here's the view from the top. We had a wonderful morning on a beautiful trail.
