8 November 2020

A long election week ended Saturday night when the presidential election was called for Joe Biden. It's such a relief to move on from the tornado of chaos that has passed for leadership the past 4 years.

We are also joyfully celebrating the election of Kamala Harris as vice-president, a historic achievement as America's first woman vice-president, and one she won based on her strong accomplishments as a public servant.  This graphic is circulating on the internet right now, showing all 48 former vice-presidents of the United States, alongside the first woman.  It's about time.

Abe was promoted to the position of Trainer at Chick-fil-A and now he gets to wear a black shirt to work instead of a red one.

We couldn't go to Craterworks last week because of exposure to COVID-19, but we were cleared to go back this week.  The boys finished up their trebuchet.  This is a photo of Gibson making the sling for the projectiles.

They fit everything together and tried out the trebuchet inside Craterworks first.  The counterweight is a plastic bucket of water (and a tightly fitting lid).

Once they knew it worked, they reassembled the trebuchet in the parking lot so they could try for maximum distance.  They used tennis balls as projectiles.  They worked on the angle the sling released the tennis balls to increase the distance and thought about modifications they could make to improve the trebuchet.  Overall, they have a solid trebuchet that's pretty fun to fire.  The boys named it the Trejan "Do It Best" Trebuchet.

We reached peak color in our backyard this week, with beautiful red, orange, yellow and purple leaves.

Helen made this cake this week, just because.  She decorated the cake with pomegranate seeds and shards of dark chocolate.

Becky is working on a geometry presentation about symmetry and wanted to use quilts to illustrate different kinds of symmetry.  Abe and Gibson helped her photograph a bunch of quilts Saturday morning, but the photos were too pixelated to enlarge for her slideshow so Brandan and Helen helped her re-photograph the quilts Saturday afternoon.

Brandan has started cooking dinner on Saturday nights.  This week he made fabulous homemade pizza in our wood stove.  With cooler temperatures outside, we appreciated the toasty warmth of the stove, too.
